Five Islands Cottage
Created for hosting backyard wine-tasting and cove gazing, the Five Islands Cottage reflects the beauty of its natural surroundings. The 16' x 25' frame is a rebuild of an 1800s boathouse which was destroyed in coastal flooding. The upgraded frame was relocated onto higher ground, nestled into the ledges of the rocky Midcoast landscape.
A small but mighty cottage, it is named from a prominent joint within its design: the English tying joint. This quintessential joint at the intersection of roof and wall is fortified by an interlocking system that is terrifically strong in tension. The main “Gunstock” posts are full dimension above, allowing for lots of joinery, then tapered below for a classic and elegant feel. The Cottage has a 12/12 roof pitch with purlins to catch vertical roof boards. The custom window & door framing creates an extra special touch for a one-of-a-kind experience within this luxurious outbuilding.
